In April 2017, Nature published an article by Lefrancais et al about a newly discovered function of the human lung: it makes blood!
Long thought to be the domain of bone marrow only, a novel way of looking at the body called two-photon intravital imaging showed that lungs contain blood stem cells that produce most of the body’s platelets. Furthermore, lungs are full of blood and immune stem cells.
Here is the video showing the generation and distribution of platelets inside the lungs.
What can we learn?
There is so much we can still learn!
And, be nice to your lungs and the will be so good to you!
